How to read the lunar calendar

The tradition behind the lunar sowing calendar is centuries old and shared by farming almanacs around the world: the waxing moon (new to full) favors sowing crops that grow above ground — leaves, fruits and grains — while the waning moon (full to new) favors root crops, since the tradition holds that energy draws downward as the moon shrinks.
